Overlooked/Underappreciated: 354 Recordings That Demand Your Attention Details
It seems like the days of flipping through vast vinyl, cassette, or CD collections is a thing of the past. And while there's no denying the convenience of having all your favorite albums on a mobile device, it's becoming more common for recordings to get lost in the shuffle and/or completely forgotten about. Author/journalist Greg Prato is willing to provide some assistance, with his 12th book overall, 'Overlooked/Underappreciated: 354 Recordings That Demand Your Attention.' Inside, you will find countless albums that you may have completely forgotten about or perhaps have never even heard of before. Either way, all 354 of these titles get the "Prato Stamp of Approval." Starting with AC/DC's 'Flick of the Switch' and wrapping up with Zombi's 'Surface to Air,' countless styles of music are represented in between - rock n' roll, hard rock, heavy metal, alternative, new wave, punk, hardcore, grunge, jazz, fusion, psychedelic, prog, folk, blues, funk, soul, rap, spoken word, power pop, big band, glam, experimental, instrumental, soundtracks…the list goes on and on. But the selections stay strong!
Reviews
Do you, or did you, enjoy hanging out with friends and just BSing about music? Old music, new music - doesn't matter. THAT is what this fun book is like. I was astonished at how many under-appreciated albums both Mr, Prato and I shared a love for - and I've never met the guy. Sure there are some we don't connect on. Anything else would just be creepy. But I feel I agree with maybe 80% of this book. Reading it had me digging our long forgotten gems and researching and buying several that I wasn't familiar with. This is the perfect book for just leaving your cares behind and digging into. Heck, the guy even remembers when and how he originally came across most of these recordings. Now THAT is a music nerd. I can relate to his record and CD clubs, library finds, holiday gifts and everything else (well, except for iTunes and other downloads - that is something I never do). If you love music, if you talk about it, write about it, love how it makes you feel. Give this book a shot. IT'S FUN.
